26 provincial airports will remain at loss

On the Office of Auditor General (OAG)'s remark that 26 provincial airports are not profitable, Chaisak Angkasuwan, director-general of the Civil Aviation Department, said on Wednesday that it would be difficult to make profits from the airports.

Among them, 17 were formerly for military use. As the commercial aviation demand grows, the Civil Aviation Department has invested Bt12.5 billion during 1992-2004 to accommodate private planes, he said.

"Thus, it would be difficult to churn profits from the airports. Commercial benefits could not either be used as the airport administration indicator. The number of planes are few and fees are low," he said.

The OAG said in its report that due to the unprofitable operations, these airports cost the nation Bt3 billion.
