Mekong Sub-region meeting draws 6 PMs

Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej and five regional prime ministers will today convene the Third Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS) in Vientiane to discuss coordinated actions to reduce poverty and promote sustainable development in the region.

This could be achieved through expanded transportation and telecommunication linkages, streamlined trade agreements, and greater environmental management efforts, according to sponsor Asian Development Bank.

Samak arrived in Laos yesterday and had a bilateral meeting with Chinese premier Wen Jiabao and also attended meetings with the youth and business forum.

He would also witness the signing ceremony for transport cooperation with Laos.

Established in 1992, the GMS has developed into one of the fastest growing regions of the world, with an average gross domestic product of over 6 per cent in recent years.
