POWER COST

April FT may rise

The energy sub-committee on fuel tariff will convene on April 1, to discuss the power generating cost in April which tends to rise due to the lower-than-expected feed of natural gas from the Arthit field.

Sombat Santijaree, governor of Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, said that in April, the agency would need to spend over Bt600 million on bunker oil for the generating of power for 10 days. During the days, 3 million litres of bunker oil would be needed, at the average price of Bt20 per litre.

Generating power from bunker oil costs Bt4 per unit, while the gas-based cost is Bt2.

About 160 million cubic feet from the Arthit field was orginally expected to feed into the system on a daily basis from March 16. However, the volume as of today is less than the expectation.

Sombat insisted that Egat would try to minimise the generating cost in April, when power demand usually peaks. Egat would increase hydropower generating capacity by 20 million units while the coal-fired plant in Mae Moh would run at full capacity at 18,000 million units.
