Charter rewrite not meant for self-serving interest: Abhhisit

Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva on Monday urged the government to commit to a charter rewrite in the public interests rather than its survival and selfserving gains.

"The Democrats have no objection if the charter is to be amended but we deem it inappropriate to having an ulterior motive on the matter," Abhisit said.

He said it would set bad precedents if government leaders could revise the political system based on their personal whims.

In sponsoring the charter amendments, the government should form a special panel to solicit public opinions on how to strengthen exisiting provisions and rectify flaws in order to improve on the overall system, he said, voicing disagreement if the rewrite would focus on eluding punishment for electoral fraud.
