ICT pushes revival of technology oversight

The Information and Communi-cations Technology (ICT) Ministry will speed up establishment of the ICT Development Act, which will be used to oversee the industry.

ICT Minister Mun Patanotai yesterday said the law was drafted eight years ago, but there had been no progress. He said he had already set up a committee to revise the draft.

"We'll work together with the Council of State on developing the draft and closely monitor its progress, to make sure it comes into effect as quickly as possible," he added.

Five years after the establishment of the ministry, there is still no law for ministry oversight of development of the ICT industry.

The Act will be the main guideline to make sure all aspects of the telecommunications and broadcasting industries move in the same direction, even though each industry already has its own laws and regulations. He said the Act would also focus on promoting equal ICT accessibility nationwide.

Meanwhile, the ministry will also revise Article 5 of the amended draft of the Frequency Allocation Act to delegate the duty of overseeing the telecom industry from the prime minister to the ICT Ministry, given that the ministry has a direct interest in regulating the industry.
