New senate speaker vows to do job with transparency

Senate Speaker Prasopsuk Boondet pledged on Wednesday to carry out his duties with honesty, transparency and nonpartisanship following a ceremony to receive the royal command on his appointment.

"My first priority is to open up the Senate for accountability," he said.

Prasopsuk invited fellow lawmakers to scrutinise his performance and vowed to streamline the legislative work by modernising the library to keep up with changes in the digital age.

He said he wanted to model the Senate's reading room after the US Library of Congress where lawmakers could conduct research as well as disseminate their legislative studies.

In regard to the bribery scandal in the race for Senate leadership, he said the upper chamber would decide by Friday whether to form a special committee to investigate the matter.

He said he was unaware of reports that an appointed senator might be involved in the forest encroachment in Phetchabun. He pleaded for time to review the issue before commenting.
