Jankovic pounds out a win over Sugiyama

The third-seeded winner followed up on a comprehensive defeat of Japan's Sugiyama last February 21 in Doha in the third round.

 Jankovic has duplicated her career-best showing in the Californian desert after reaching the last 16 a year ago. The Serb advanced in 59 minutes despite six double-faults, breaking the 32-year-old, 39th-ranked Sugiyama six times.

 "I was very focused on the court, and I really tried to do my job out there," Jankovic said. "I didn't want to let her get into the match, so I was just playing one point at a time."

   Francesca Schiavone, Italy's 13th seed who reached the Dubai semi-finals last month, won a countrywoman battle over Flavia Pennetta 6-3, 6-4.

 Australian Casey Dellacqua moved into the fourth round of an event for only the second time in her career, moving through as Austrian teenager Tamira Paszek retired with illness trailing 6-1, 4-0.

 Dellacqua also got to the fourth round at the Australian Open.

 On the men's side, French eighth seed Richard Gasquet comfortably accounted for Argentine Juan Chela 6-2, 6-1.
