2009 deficit at 2.5% of GDP

The Cabinet on Tuesday approved the 2009 budget, when the government is to run a deficit of Bt249.5 billion or 2.5 per cent of gross domestic product.

The expenditures are set at Bt1.8 trillion, up from Bt1.75 trillion in the 2008 fiscal year. Revenue would be Bt1.585 trillion, according to Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Surapong Suebwonglee.

He attributed the budget deficit partially to the Bt31.9 billion allocation for fiscal reserves.

Of total, Bt1.33 trillion is for fixed expenses, up 9.7 per cent from the previous year. It accounted for 72.6 per cent of total. Another batch worth Bt407 billion or 22.2 per cent is for investment purposes, while Bt64 billion or 3.5 per cent is earmarked for loan repayment.
