PM orders new measures

Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej has ordered economic units to brainstorm on possible fiscal and monetary measures, in the times of high oil prices.

Ampon Kittiampon, secretary-general of the National Economic and Social Development Board, said the prime minister seeks to narrow the income gap of urban and rural people, so that the poor are more immune to economic problems. The brainstorming should provide the framework how to exercise the fiscal and monetary policies in taming oil price impacts, like what the government did in 2004.

To brainstorm are the Finance Ministry, Commerce Ministry, Bank of Thailand, and the NESDB.
