Raikkonen fails to qualify, Hamilton takes top post

Melbourne (dpa) - Vice world champion Lewis Hamilton grabbed top ranking for the season's first Formula 1 run in qualifying races Saturday. The 23-year-old McLaren-Mercedes driver turned the fastest round with 1:26.714 minutes before Sunday's Australian Grand Prix.

He was followed by Robert Kubica of Poland in BMW-Sauber; Heikki Kovalainen of Finland in McLaren-Mercedes; and Felipe Massa of Brazil in Ferrari.

World champ Kimi Raikkonen of Finland failed to qualify for top position after mechanical problems with his Ferrari, and will have to join the pack Sunday in the Melbourne race.
