Prosecution disagreement on the rubber sapling case

Attorney General Chaikasem Nitisiri notified the Assets Examination Committee (AEC) on Friday about the results of the presecution review on the rubber sapling case.

"I will not reveal the details of the prosecution review because it is a classified information," he said, though hinting about differing legal opinions between prosecutors and graft busters.

In its report, the AEC indicted 45 senior officials under the Thaksin Shinawatra administration, including former deputy prime minister Somkid Jatusripitak, for graft violations relating to the Bt1.4 billion project to distribute 90 million rubber saplings to villagers.

Prosecution sources said Chaikasem recommended for the AEC and his office to form a joint panel to thrash out "inconsistencies" found in the report in order to strengthen the case for trial.

They said prosecutors were optimistic that the AEC would agree to revise its report and avoid a repeat of the lottery case in which it decided not to involve the public counsel at trial.
