Courts to stay out of the gov't - PAD struggle

The courts of justice will not get involved in the struggle between the government and the opposition movement led by the People's Alliance for Democracy, Judiciary Office deputy secretary general Sarawut Benjathikul said on Friday.

"Public opinions will have no impacts on the judiciary independence," he said.

The courts have no jurisdiction to interfere with the freedom of expression as enshrined by the Constitution and individuals are free to air their views without infringing on the legal limits, he said.

Sarawut reacted to ther verbal spat between Interior Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung and PAD leader Sondhi Limthongkul. Chalerm warned about a court's order to revoke bail if Sondhi went ahead to organise the antigovernment seminar on March 28. Sondhi countered that his political views had no bearing on his bail condition relating to his legal wrangling for defamation.
