Liverpool kick out Inter Milan in historic English CL showing

Milan (dpa) - Liverpool won 1-0 at 10-man Inter Milan on Tuesday night to give England's Premier League an unprecedented four teams in the European Champions League quarter-finals.

Fernando Torres grabbed the winner at San Siro in the 63rd minute as the Reds won the round of 16 tie 3-0 overall. Inter's Julio Cruz wasted two first-half chances before Nicolas Burdisso was sent off in the 49th for the Italian league leaders.

Liverpool joined Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal in the quarter-finals of the elite event, with Schalke 04, Roma, Barcelona and Fenerbahce also among the last eight. Until Tuesday, no country had managed more than three teams in the CL quarter-finals.

The quarter-final and semi-final draw is on Friday en route to the May 21 final in Moscow.

Liverpool completed Milanese woes a week after Arsenal shocked holders AC Milan with a 2-0 win at the same San Siro stadium.

While The Gunners won the second leg from late goals by Cesc Fabregas and Emmanuel Adebayor, Liverpool paved the way to success with late strikes from Dirk Kuyt and Steven Gerrard at Anfield in the first leg and then wrapped up the tie Tuesday.

Inter tried their best, but Julio Cruz aimed inches right with a diagonal shot early on and was also unsuccessful with a delicate backheeler in the 43rd which saved by Liverpool goalkeeper Jose Manuel Reina.

The Italians' fate was then effectively sealed when Burdisso got his marching order for a second bookable offence, knocking down Lucas Leiva.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic could have revived Inter's hopes despite being a man down, but the Sweden striker aimed inches left.

The tie was decided for good in the 63rd when Torres took up a pass from Fabio Aurelio, turned and smashed the ball home for his fourth goal of the competition to see the five-time winners and 2007 finalists Liverpool through.
