Executive Unseen

Businesswomen might not be as well recognised as businessmen, but in the Thai construction industry, Chantana Sukumanont, executive vice president of Siam City Cement is an icon.

Published on March 7, 2008

Not only is she known as the Iron Lady of Insee, she is also looked up to as a single working mother who strikes a perfect balance between work and family.

When she is not painting, learning to play the piano or absorbed in meditation, she dedicates her leisure time to Tim, her only son.

"Mom is my role model. She lives life as she wants. Though everyone thinks she is tough, I think she is very sweet indeed. Once, she practiced singing Silly Fool's Song, just because I liked it. Last year, I sewed a kitty doll for her birthday present. It took me a month to do it," he said.

"In the past few years, she has earned academic certifications from Harvard Business School, Ramkamhaeng University and others," Tim said. "I just wonder how in only 24 hours, she manages to work so hard, take care of me and also study."

"Life is short, so I always make every day precious. My philosophy is to work hard and play hard," Chantana said.

"But Sunday is 'a big rest day'. I usually retreat to my little haven, staying calm doing nothing, just having brunch with my beloved family," she said.

Chantana's favourite quote is by Logan Pearsall Smith, an Anglo-American author: "There are two things to aim at in life: first, to get what you want; and after that, to enjoy it. Only the wisest of mankind achieve the second."
