Server consolidation and virtualisation are set to become key technologies for the development of data centres, said Tanapong Ittisakulchai, country manager for Systems and Technology Group at IBM Thailand.
He said that to help businesses better manage their data centres server consolidation and virtualisation are a must.
There are three stages through which clients can move toward a better-managed enterprise data centre, he said.
The first stage deals with operational issues through consolidation, virtualisation and service management. Physical consolidation and optimisation of servers, storage and networks is critical to this stage.
The second stage involves sharing the infrastructure for easier management, automation and provisioning of resources. Infrastructure and services are deployed with a virtualised resource pool of systems which can be scaled efficiently and quickly.
The third stage is called the dynamic stage in which dynamic capabilities are gauged to ensure that the new data-centre environment can integrate real-time data - including enterprise data, real-time streams and transactional data - to derive the full business value of information.
Tanapong said the virtualised enterprise data centre model is more efficient and better connected with business partners and the Internet. It gains more flexibility by leveraging Service Oriented Architecture and open standards.
Thus, the new enterprise data centre will make better economic sense and offer dramatic improvements by leveraging virtualisation across all systems.
