The funding is for use over three years.
Tridi director Supot Tiarawut hopes the project will create 20 new telecom researchers and a number of new telecom products.
In 2006, the country had about 2,600 telecom researchers, according to the institute.
Tridi signed a memorandum of understanding for the funding project - "Excellence 2008 Plus Three" - with eight educational institutions yesterday. They are: Chulalongkorn University, Thammasat University's Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology, Prince of Songkla University, King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Lat Krabang, Kasetsart University, Chiang Mai University, Khon Kaen University and King Mongkut's University of Technology Thon Buri.
The fund will be given to support the R&D of their master's and doctorate degree students with a focus on next-generation networks, wireless broadband technology,
short-range radio communications technology, and optical fibre networks.
Tridi was founded by the National Telecommunications Commission to support the development of the telecom industry.
Supot said the R&D would focus on producing innovative technology that can be really used in the industry.
According to Tridi, the value of the information and communications technology industry in 2006 was Bt914.501 billion, of which ICT solutions and equipment accounted for Bt493.063 billion and telecom services Bt421.438 billion.
