Korean archers capture six gold

South Koreans continued their remarkable run in the first Asian Grand Prix 2008 at the Hua Mark Archery Range with a two-day haul of six gold medals, including a sweep in the men's and women's individual recurve events yesterday.

Yun Mi-jin recovered from finishing third in the 70m individual recurve shoot-out on the previous day to win the gold medal in the women's individual recurve competition yesterday by beating team-mate Lee Hye-yeon 109-100.

The third-place play-off was also an all-Korean affair, with Kim Yu-mi surprising Kim Mun-joung 113-108. The loser had captured the top spot in the 70m shoot-out on Wednesday.

Korea's second gold of the day came from Lee Sang-hyun, who stunned SEA Games gold medallist Chu Sian Cheng from Malaysia 116-115 in the men's individual recurve. Both archers scored identical scores of 28 and 57 at the first two ends of shooting, but Chu improved his form to surge ahead 87-86 at the third end.

Korean Choi Won-jong bagged the bronze after edging compatriot Kim Won-sup 109-108 in the third-place play-off.

Meanwhile, Filipina Jenifer Chan tamed Vietnam's Tran Nguyen Tieu Anh 113-108 to win the women's individual compound event, while Burmese Ye Min Swe won the men's individual compound title after shooting down Indonesian Kuswantoro 116-113.

Eight gold medals were on offer on the previous day and Korean archers ruled the roost as expected with four gold medals from Kim Mun-joung in the women's individual recurve 70m shoot-out, Lee Sang-hyun in the men's individual recurve 70m shoot-out, the men's and women's teams recurve 70m shoot-out.

After two days, South Korea lead the medals table with six gold, two silver and three bronze medals. The Philippines are in second place with three gold, one silver and one bronze. Vietnam and Indonesia share the third place with one gold and two bronze apiece.

Hosts Thailand have managed only one bronze medal from the men's team compound 70m shoot-out event on Wednesday.

Archers from 19 countries including South Korea, Kazakhstan, Japan, India, Indonesia, Taiwan, Malaysia, Vietnam, Qatar and Burma are taking part in the three-day event. Four gold medals are up for grabs today, the final day of the tournament.
