Farmers push for more egg consumption

Egghen breeders nationwide have called for the government to create the "school egg" project to enhance consumption as they are facing losses from the rising cost of raw materials.

Bulsiri Suwannashin, director of Egg Hen Farmers Club of Chiang Mai, said on Friday that the project - to supply eggs to schools nationwide like milks and other items - will help promote people to consume more eggs and create a variety of egg menus.

"Egg is the cheapest source of protien. The higher demand will also help reduce the farmers' losses," he said.

Suthee Techathanawat, director of Egg Hen Farmers Club of Chachengsao, said farmers are facing the spiralling cost of raw materials. In addition, the climate change also hurts the output.

Production cost reaches Bt2.5 per egg. Maize price has increased from Bt6.36 per kilogramme in 2006 to Bt9, soybean meal from Bt10.3 per kg to Bt17 and fishmeal from Bt20 per kg to Bt27.10.
