VfL Wolfsburg and Bayern leave it late to advance in Cup

Munich - Bundesliga clubs Bayern Munich and VfL Wolfsburg on Wednesday advanced to the semi-finals of the German Cup after extra- time victories against 1860 Munich and SV Hamburg respectively.

Bayern Munich, who ended the game with ten men, beat second division 1860 Munich 1-0 with a last minute penalty scored by substitute Franck Ribery, while Wolfsburg beat Hamburg 2-1.

1860 Munich had two players sent off in the second half of extra- time and were beaten by a penalty that should possibly not have been given.

Defender Torben Hoffmann said that the players were very disappointed. "I think everybody can see how disappointed we are. We wanted to create a sensation and we came so close.

"To lose a game in the last minute of extra time is a terrible way to lose. But we showed that we are a good side and we worked very hard and came so close."

Playing against their illustrious city rivals, 1860 Munich were weakened in the 34th minute as goalkeeper Philipp Tschauner had to come on for Michael Hofmann who was injured after a challenge by Luca Toni, who was shown the yellow card shortly afterwards.

Teenager Toni Kroos nearly gave Bayern the lead shortly before half-time, but after finding himself alone in front of the 1860 goal, he blasted the ball high.

Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld brought on French international Ribery for the second half and the midfielder immediately made an impact as Bayern took control of the match.

Dutchman Mark van Bommel nearly opened the scoring in the 58th minute as Tschauner could only block the striker's dropkick and although the ball came to van Bommel again as the keeper was on the floor, he narrowly missed the target.

A few minutes later Bayern captain Oliver Kahn had to be at his best to deny 18-year-old Lars Bender a goal from 11 metres.

Toni was given his marching orders five minutes from the end for a second bookable offence after pushing 1860 defender Markus Thorandt to the ground.

In the second half of extra-time Benjamin Schwarz followed the Italian for an early shower after he pushed Ribery and the Frenchman theatrically fell to the ground.

Bayern were awarded a penalty in the last minute of extra-time after Miroslav Klose was brought down on the edge of the area by Chhunly Pagenburg, even though television footage suggested that the foul occurred outside the area.

1860 coach Marco Kurz said that he respected the decision. "Even though I think the foul was outside the area, the referee gave a penalty and we have to respect that."

1860 were reduced to nine men in injury time after Thorandt was sent off for a foul on Ribery.

Hitzfeld said that it had been the right decision not to start the game with Klose and Ribery. "Ribery was not fit for 90 minutes and Klose was left outside because Lukas Podolski also has a right to play, especially after scoring two goals against Aberdeen in the UEFA Cup last week."

In the earlier game in Wolfsburg, Brazilians Marcelinho and Grafite scored for the home side as they advanced to the round of the last four.

Grafite gave Wolfsburg an early lead with a converted penalty, but Hamburg captain Rafael van der Vaart equalized in the 70th minute with a sensational long-range shot.

Marcelinho delicately chipped the ball over goalkeeper Frank Rost 11 minutes from the end of extra time to give his side victory.

Wolfsburg coach Felix Magath, who joined the team in northern Germany after being fired by Bayern Munich, said that playing against his former club in the semi-finals would not be anything special.

"I am quite happy to meet them in the final. We are through to the semi-final and that is good, but now we want to go all the way to the final in Berlin," he said.

On Tuesday, second division side Carl Zeiss Jena sensationally knocked out Bundesliga champions VfB Stuttgart 5-4 on penalties after the game in Stuttgart ended 2-2 after extra time.

The other team through on Tuesday was Borussia Dortmund, who advanced to the semi-finals for the first time since 1989 with a 3-1 victory against big-spending second division club Hoffenheim.
