Transfer of DSI chief justified: Sompong

Justice Minister Sompong Amornwiwat on Monday defended his decision for a transfer involving two senior justice officials, arguing he had no ulterior motive and did everything within the civil service guidelines.

"My decision is not meant as a revenge nor a facilitation of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra to return home," he said.

Under Sompong's instruction, Department of Special Investigation director general Sunai Manomaiudom will move to head a newlyformed agency, the Public Sector Counter Corruption Office and his deputy Thawee Sodsong is to replace him.

Sompong said Sunai was not demoted as speculated because he still retained his seniority and was well qualified for the new assignment which is of equal importance to his old job.

The transfer of Sunai and Thawee is expected to be approved by the Cabinet tomorrow.

Critics voiced concern that the removal of Sunai sent a wrong signal on the DSI's handling of legal proceedings involving Thaksin.

In his reaction, Sunai said he would let society decide whether his transfer was appropriate.
