Hong Kong blank Thai women to enter last 4

Hong Kong smashed Thailand's hopes of booking a berth in the Uber Cup with a convincing 3-0 win in the quarter-finals of the Asia Zone qualifier in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, yesterday.

In the first rubber, world No 6 Wang Chen tamed Soratja Chansrisukot 21-13 21-17 to hand Hong Kong the advantage.

Hong Kong's Yip Pui Yin, ranked 12th in the world, stretched the lead after trouncing Thai teenager Porntip Buranaprasertsuk 21-15 21-19. Koon Wai Chee and Wang Chen helped Hong Kong book a ticket to the final with a come-from-behind 10-21 21-16 21-10 win over Duang-anong Aroonke-sorn and Kunchala Voravichit-chaikul. The Thai women face India today in the play-offs for the 5th to 8th positions.

In the qualifiers for the Thomas Cup, the Thais, who advanced as Group D leaders following a 4-1 victory over Hong Kong on Thursday, were to take on Singapore, who finished second in Group B, in the quarter-final tie.
