Two-time winners Tottenham Hotspur and Bolton Wanderers made it a 100-per-cent success for the English contingent, but Spain lost Atletico Madrid and Villareal, leaving only Getafe left in the competition.

 Leverkusen sent Galatasaray crashing out in a 5-1 thrashing to set up a last-16 clash with fellow German Bundesliga side SV Hamburg.

 Hamburg were held to a goalless draw by FC Zurich but progress 3-1 on aggregate after their victory in Switzerland last week.

 German league leaders Bayern Munich eased through thanks to a 5-1 home victory over Scottish side Aberdeen for a 7-3 aggregate win.

 However Nuremberg fell to two late goals to Portugal's Benfica who grabbed a 2-2 draw for 3-2 aggregate win.

 Germany will have four teams in the next round if Werder Bremen triumph in a match later Thursday.

 Leverkusen scored three goals in the first 22 minutes and ran out easy winners in a one-sided second leg against Galatasaray following the teams' goalless draw in Istanbul last week.

 In the encounter between two former UEFA Cup winners, Leverkusen - who lifted the trophy in 1987/88 - were soon in control with goals in the 11th and 13th minutes from Sergej Barbarez and Stefan Kiessling.

 Barbarez struck his second in the 22nd, defender Karim Haggui netted 10 minutes after the break and Bernd Schneider made it five from the penalty spot five minutes later after a foul on Kiessling.

 The Turkish side - who won the title in 1999/2000 - notched a consolation three minutes from time when Ghanaian midfielder Ahmed Barusso converted a penalty.

 "They're the sort of games that are a lot of fun," said Barbarez for whom the Hamburg tie will be a meeting with his old club.

 "A high win like that against such a strong opponent is something special. Now we're looking forward to Hamburg."

   Bayern Munich meanwhile despatched Aberdeen thanks to first-half goals from defenders Lucio (12) and Daniel van Buyten (36) followed by a Lukas Podolski brace in the 71st and 77th minutes and an 85th-minute strike from Mark van Bommel, two minutes after Steve Lovell headed in for the visitors.

 Bayern will now meet Anderlecht who drew 1-1 at Girondins Bordeaux for a 2-1 aggregate success.

 Nuremberg had one foot in the next round when leading Benfica with second-half goals from Angelos Charisteas and Ivan Saenko, but the visitors spoiled the party with a 90th-minute strike from Oscar Cardoza and another in stoppage time from Angel di Maria.

 The 3-2 aggregate victory sets up a meeting with Spain's Getafe who downed AEK Athens 3-0 and 4-1 on aggregate.

 English side Bolton caused an upset by holding fancied Spanish side Atletico Madrid to a goalless draw after their 1-0 win at home. Next stop for Bolton is Sporting Lisbon who enjoyed a 3-0 win at Basel to go through 5-0 on aggregate.

 Everton breezed through with a 6-1 drubbing of Norway's Brann Bergen for an 8-1 aggregate win.

 Three goals from Nigeria striker Yakubu Ayegbeni, two from Andy Johnson and one from Arteta set up a last-16 encounter with Italy's Fiorentina who were 2-1 winners over Rosenborg Trondheim, the other Norwegian hope, for a 3-1 aggregate.

 Tottenham progressed thanks to a 1-1 draw at home to Slavia Prague for a 3-2 aggregate win, and will meet Dutch hopes PSV Eindhoven who were 2-1 winners (4-1 aggregate) at Swedish side Helsingborgs.

 Scotland's Glasgow Rangers edged through at Panathinaikos to set up a possible meeting with Werder Bremen who hold a 3-0 lead going into their later second-leg match at Portugal's Braga.

 After the sides had finished goalless in Glasgow, the Greek side took the lead through Ionnis Goumas in the 12th minute only for Spanish striker Nacho Novo to notch the all-important equalizer nine minutes from time.

 Olympique Marseille slipped to a 2-0 defeat at Spartak Moscow but progressed thanks to their 3-0 home win last week and will now have another Russian challenge in Zenit St Petersburg.

 The Russian champions had Roman Shirokov sent off for a second yellow card shortly after half-time as they slipped to a 2-1 defeat at Villareal, a result, however, which proved enough on the away goals rule after a 1-0 victory at home.

 Pavel Pogrebnyak's goal on the half hour proved decisive despite  Franco and Jon Dahl Tomasson netting for the Spanish.

 The exits of Atletico and Villareal leave Getafe the last Spanish side in the competition. Goals from Esteban Granero just before half-time, Cosmin Contra from the penalty spot in the 82nd minute and Braulio two minutes later gave them a 3-0 win over AEK.
