Trade deficit in 17 months

Thailand swung into a trade deficit for the first time in 17 months, when imports expanded 49 per cent year on year against the export growth of 33 per cent.

In the month, the export value was US$13.96 billion against $14.6 billion of imports, leaving $653 million in trade deficit, according to Commerce Minister Mignkwan Sangsuwan.

Mingkwan said that nearly all export sectors experienced an expansion in value, while the value to all markets also expanded particularly the traditional markets. Export value to the US grew 16 per cent year on year, to Japan up 11.4 per cent and to Europe up 21.5 per cent. Exports to Asean also expanded 32.9 per cent while those to China grew 45.5 per cent.
