Exactly who is Uncle Koo?

Paiboon Damrongchai-tham, the big boss at giant entertainment company GMM Grammy, has maintained a low profile lately, especially since Thaksin Shinawatra suddenly lost his job as prime minister.

Recently, however, Paiboon sort of appeared in a commercial for mobile-phone service provider Advanced Info Service. After all, AIS has in the past partnered with GMM Grammy for quite a number of business projects.

In the latest commercial, which features a girl called Nicole, AIS highlights a new service in which the receiver can block calls from unwanted numbers.

In the commercials, Nicole is on vacation, while executives, apparently from GMM Grammy, are having a meeting. They are trying to call Nicole to discuss business plans, but she is on vacation and does not want to be interrupted while at a spa.

The commercials also feature a lady trying to call her, but the line is unavailable, so another staff member tries calling, also to no avail. Apparently, Nicole has blocked these numbers on her phone.

Then we see a guy standing by the window but only from behind. The actor has grey hair - plus he twists his neck, one of Paiboon's most obvious habits.

While the others cannot call Nicole, this grey-haired man succeeds in doing so. Nicole answers, "Hey, Uncle Koo." Uncle Koo is a well-known alias of Paiboon.

The commercial then ends.

Viewers who know Paiboon are left wondering whether, like the singer Nicole Theriault, Paiboon was playing himself in the commercials.

During a press conference last week organised by GMM Grammy to discuss the company's other projects, Nation reporter Kwanchai Rungfapaisarn was very curious about the commercials.

He rose and asked Paiboon: "Uncle Koo, was that you in those commercials?"

Paiboon looked back and smiled.

"Not me. I don't even know the guy. But that actor, I think he's very much like me."
