He said his findings were for the consideration of Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej who would make a final decision over the panel's future.
Sompong said he thought it was good that the military-installed Surayud government set up the panel to look into the 2,569 murders and its report contained "accurate information".
"But its role should be over. There is nothing else left for it to do," he said.
Sompong was speaking in an interview after his first meeting at the ministry, where he issued three policies - giving justice to everyone especially "people at grassroots level"; a sustainable but non violent anti-narcotics mission, and the end of violence in the three southern provinces.
Asked to comment on charges of extensive police corruption and abuse of power, Sompong said he would push for a check mechanism in the new structure of the national police service, which was undergoing restructural reform.
