Victims seek relief

Hundreds of rental-car owners who were the victims of a car sales scam yesterday marched to the Office of the Insurance Commissioner (OIC) to ask for assistance, saying they faced a cash shortage and could not pay insurance premiums on time.

The car-rental owners had bought cars from a bogus company offering financial incentive packages, but the cars were never delivered or were exported to neighbouring countries instead, leaving the victims with outstanding insurance payments.

Chantra Purnariksha, secretary-general to the OIC, said the office would coordinate with the insurance companies and leasing firms to negotiate the delay of payments.

A meeting between the rental car owners and 27 insurance companies will be held tomorrow at the OIC office.

Chantra said that the OIC will ask the insurance companies to ease their conditions on repayment for the victims. She said the OIC will ask the Bank of Thailand to negotiate with the leasing firms about a delay in the payments. To solve the problem,

insurance companies should consider relaxing the payment conditions.

Suthep Songsri, the spokesman for the rental-car owners, said that all the scam victims had suffered as a result of the case. They promised to pay all debts and only wanted the government to help them postpone the period of payment.
