DTAC sees red over VoIP calls

Total Access Communica-tion (DTAC) yesterday asked the national telecom regulator to impose the network interconnection regulations on Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service providers, saying it was gaining nothing from these firms dumping their call traffic on its network. Suranan Wongwithayakam-jorn, secretary-general of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), said the regulator would look into the matter soon.

The NTC's interconnection regulations require all

major telecom operators, such as cellular and fixed-line

telephone operators, to share voice and data revenue between the networks involved in the calls in a proportionate and fair way.

However, the VoIP providers, which hold the NTC's type-2 licence, are not subject to the interconnection regulations.

According to a source at DTAC, the company would have earned at least Bt400 million in fees if the VoIP service providers had been subject to the regulations.
