Ballot boxes safe and of no concern to Samak: Sumeth

Election Commission member Sumeth Upanisakorn on Wednesday ensured about safety measures relating to the handling of ballot boxes in rebutting the Tuesday's comments by the prime minister.

"The EC has the jurisdiction over ballot boxes and kept them in adequate safety either at provincial election offices or at local police stations during the electoral process," he said.

Sumeth said he saw no justification for Samak Sundaravej to be overly concerned about the matter.

The spat between the EC and the government was triggered after Samak questioned the EC's handling of ballot boxes as his way of refusing to involve in the awareness campaign to boost the voter turnout for the March 2 senatorial race.

EC secretary general Suthiphon Thaveechaigarn asked the prime minister on Tuesday to help raising awareness but he refused by being critical of the EC performance.
