Tracks not the answer: Sompong

Justice Minister Sompong Amornwiwat yesterday dismissed a suggestion that race tracks be built or made available for young motorbike street racers to show off their craft and encourage them to not speed illegally on streets.

Speaking during his inspection of a youth corrections home where a large number of the youngsters are undergoing a rehabilitation course, he said opening race tracks was not the right way to solve the problem.

Social Development and Human Security Minister Sutha Chansaeng had earlier floated the idea of race tracks.

Sompong said he was concerned about the arrests of the young racers two weeks ago by police after many of them complained to him they were not racing, but were spectators and riding bicycles during the arrest.

Sompong said he was considering allowing the use of GPS-location tags for petty criminals or keeping them under house arrest rather than in prisons where they could get influenced by career criminals.
