Govt urges reviews on CL impacts

The Samak government has ordered Public Health Minister Chaiya Sasomsap to seek discussion with the commerce and foreign affairs ministry on the impacts of compulsory licensing (CL).

Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej said on Tuesday that originally, the CL issue was supposed to discussed and joinlty undertaken by the three ministries. However, it turned out that the Public Health Ministry acted alone on this.

"The Public Health Ministry should discuss with the other two ministries to find out advantages and disadvantages of the scheme and the financial figures of the benefits and losses," he said.

The Public Health Ministry in the Surayud government announced the CL policy, which involves the local production of some key drugs despite pending patents by foreign pharmaceutical companies.
