The University of Bristol, United Kingdom, will confer an honorary doctorate in law for Dr Surin Pitsuwan at a ceremony to be conducted in Bangkok next month, an informed source told The Nation.

This will be the first honoary degree for Surin, who was picked for the Asean top job last year.

The new Asesn Secretary General will give a keynote address on Asean at the Institute of Strategic and International Studies, Chulalongkorn University on 31 March.

Surin was former foreign minister of Thailand from 1997-2001. He has been active in international affairs and developmental cooperation.

Last week, he told the staff of the Jakarta-based Asean Secretariat that Asean must reach out to ordinary people and be more friendly.
