Egat to probe kerogen field

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat) yesterday began exploring the potential of a kerogen field in Tak's Mae Sot district.

Published on February 8, 2008

The potential of the kerogen field was estimated to yield 3,900 million barrels of crude oil for the next 60 years.

Tak Governor Chumpon Polrak said Egat director of natural energy plans Supakrit Sitahiran and other officials had explained to kamnans and village headmen in Tambon Mae Sot, Mae Pa, Mae Kasa and Tha Sai Luad that the first well would be in Ban Huai Kalok in Mae Pa.

It had the potential to contain 390 million tonnes from the total 620 million tonnes expected from the 104-square-kilometre plain, he said.

Exploration would continue until 2010, Chumpon said. This year alone, 16 wells would be dug, each 250 metres deep.

It was expected that one tonne of kerogen would produce 10 barrels of crude oil reserves, with 390 million tonnes turning out 3,900 million barrels, he said.

If developed, the country could make use of the Mae Sot oil source for nearly 60 years.
