Notebook sales drive growing Indian market for computers

The popularity of laptop and notebook computers has overtaken desktop computers in India, as shown by the sales figures for PCs brought out by the Manufacturers' Association for Information Technology (MAIT).

Published on February 8, 2008

As per the biannual report of MAIT, the body representing India's IT hardware, training and R&D services, PC sales (desktops and laptops) between April and September 2007, driven by laptop sales, stood at 3.28 million units, an 11-per-cent growth over the corresponding period a year earlier.

While the laptop market grew by a healthy 59 per cent, the desktop segment registered a mere 3-per-cent growth in the first half of the current fiscal year.

"Notebooks have emerged as a significant driver for the PC market in India in the first half of 2007-08," said MAIT executive director Vinnie Mehta. "Sale of notebooks surpassed 680,000 units, growing 59 per cent over the corresponding period last year, accounting for 21 per cent of the total PC market in the country.

Notebooks accounted for less than 3 per cent of the PC market four years ago," he added.  The Statesman, Asia News Network
