Tourism fair for the North

Boutique hoteliers, spa-operators and local handicraft-exporters are all displaying their wares in "Passport to Chiang Mai 2008", the northern capital's first ever travel-trade event, being held at Chiang Mai's JJ market place until tomorrow.

Organisers say the three-day event paves the way for operators to be independent of other, larger fairs.

"Some operators in Chiang Mai go to promote their products and meet buyers in national and international travel fairs, but not everyone can afford this," said Jirann Siri, one of the organisers of the event.

"So we decided to hold our own trade fair and bring potential customers straight to Chiang Mai."

Jirann added that in this way buyers could have a first-hand look at the deals on offer, instead of just relying on information included in adverts and leaflets. More than 30 travel agents, mostly from Bangkok, met up with the 100 or so Chiang Mai vendors, including spa-operators, owners of small and luxury hotels and hosts of extreme-sports events.

Known as the "Rose of the North", Chiang Mai is known all over the world for its Lanna heritage and beautiful surroundings.

Plus, the city is quickly becoming hip with its many boutique hotels, spas and fusion restaurants.

The Passport to Chiang Mai offers some good holiday deals, some of which are discounted 15 to 30 per cent.

"Many of the sellers are also owners, so they can give buyers good deals," Jirann explained. The travel fair has also given exporters of traditional textiles, earthenware and woodwork a chance to promote their products.

"These exporters may have a low profile locally, but they are well recognised in the international market. This allows event-goers to purchase stylish and high-quality products at affordable prices," Jirann said.
