Bangkok City Assembly calls for probe into Chatuchak Market administration

The Bangkok City Assembly has asked for an investigation into the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's handling of the Chatuchak Market, citing mismanagement and hinting at a lack of transparency.

Councillor Prademchai Bunchuaylua (Huay Khwang - People Power Party) said yesterday that private companies had collected more than Bt1 million in fees for the use of public toilets under the BMA concession, but had actually submitted only about Bt270,000 - an amount much lower than that stated in the contract.

He said he had also learned that three commercial banks had "donated" more than Bt20 million to have their branches and two ATM machines set up in the Chatuchak Market area, but he did not know if the money had been received lawfully by the BMA's market-operating board.

Councillor Aphichart Halamjiak (Din Daeng - Democrat) said the assembly had never been given the authority to inspect the market-operating board's work, and that he had received a large number of complaints from vendors and business operators at the market.

Councillor Wirat Meenchai-anant (Min Buri - PPP) said the management of Chatuchak and other Bangkok markets was in the "dark ages" under Apirak Kosayodhin's governorship.

He also went on to attack Apirak over the suspicious use of his official car and the undecided future of renting the Chatuchak Market from the State Railway of Thailand.
