Athletes bag cash awards

A total of Bt242.855 million in cash incentives were given away yesterday to Thai athletes who won medals in four major sporting competitions, including last year's SEA Games in Nakhon Ratchasima.

Former Prime Minister General Surayudh Chulanont presided over the ceremony at the Santi Maitree Building

inside the Government House, which was attended by hundreds of Thai athletes, including HRH Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana, who competed in the badminton event.

In the Special Olympics World Games, an event featuring athletes with intellectual disabilities, the Thais captured 17 gold, 12 silver and 11 bronze medals.

The winners from this event received Bt2.681-million in incentives. The Kingdom's athletes also made their mark in the Asian Indoor Games to return

with 68 medals, including 19 gold and 28 silver. They received Bt21.245-million in incentives.

The 24th SEA Games ended on a scintillating note, with the hosts reaping a rich harvest of 183 gold, 123 silver and 103 bronze medals - to be crowned the overall champions.

Each gold medallist received Bt200,000, the silver medallist Bt100,000 and Bt50,000 for every bronze medallist.

At the 4th Asean Para Games, hosts Thailand retained the overall title claiming 256 gold, 109 silver and 84 bronze medals. The Thai special athletes received a total of Bt27.168 million in cash incentives.
