School fees cancelled pending Council of State's ruling

Education Minister Wijit Srisa-an on Tuesday cancelled school's extra-curriculum educational fees on ground that such practice was believed to breach the constitution.

Wijit said the constitution stipulated the government must provide Thai children 12-year free education. Upon the Basic Education Commission (BEC) proposal, he signed a ministerial regulation to cancel such fees, which schools under the BEC prepare to collect from parents in the coming academic year, until it was clear from the Council of State that such fees could be collected and how much.

Earlier last year, the Comptroller General's Department at Finance Ministry had announced about the educational tuition and fees that civil servants' children could withdraw from the government, leading to the Education Ministry's conclusion that it was all right for schools to collect extra-curriculum educational fees.

Thus the ministry issued a regulation regarding the extra-curriculum educational fees on December 15 that schools could do that with permission from the school board and the students' consent.
