Royal condolences

Their Majesties the King and the Queen sent a message of condolence over the death of former President Suharto.

The letter was sent to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and expressed deepest condolences over the passing to the people of Indonesia and Suharto's family. Suharto died aged 86 of multiple organ failure on Sunday after three weeks in hospital, leading the government to declare seven days of public mourning.

Outgoing Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont also sent his condolences to Yudhoyono over the passing of the former Indonesian strongman.

Thailand praised Suharto's crucial role in contributing to peace, stability, and cooperation in the region, the letter said. Without Suharto, the establishment of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) in 1967, and the 1976 Bali Concord to promote peace and stability in the region would never have been perfected.
