Democrats pick Abhisit

The Democrat Party resolved yesterday to nominate leader Abhisit Vejjajiva for prime minister in Parliament today.

A party meeting voted unanimously for Abhisit's nomination, Democrat spokesman Ong-art Klampaiboon said after the meeting, which lasted more than two hours.

There was a lengthy debate before the participants could reach a conclusion, according to a source.

The spokesman said there were three reasons for Abhisit's nomination: it was in line with democratic practice, the Democrat leader was capable of being prime minister and it would be a chance to allow the public to compare Abhisit with People Power Party leader Samak Sundaravej.

Samak is expected to become the coalition parties' nomination for the top job.
