Thai exchange's value drops 10%

The Thai exchange's market capitalisation has fallen 10 per cent so far this year to Bt5.67 trillion, due to the foreign sell-offs following worries on US sub-prime crisis.

The market capitalisation as of December 28 was Bt6.64 trillion.

SET President Patareeya Benjapholchai however announced on Friday that throughout 2008, the daily trading average would be Bt22 billion, against Bt17 billion in 2007.

Meanwhile, the exchange targets to draw only 37 companies to list on the main and second-tier bourses this year, due to the lacklustre trading environment.

While 25 companies are targeted for the main bourse, the remaining 12 are for the Market for Alternative Investment.

Patareeya Benjapholchai said on Friday that the number of new initial public offerings would be low due to the overall gloomy outlook in general investment aside from the impacts from the US sub-prime crisis.
