Motorcycle market continues stagnant
AP Honda Co Ltd, the manufacturer of Honda motorcycles, is confident that motorcycle demand in Thailand this year would reach 1.6 million units.
President Zenjiro Sakurai said the market would be stagnant this year due to positive and negative factors. While the baht strengthens and oil prices keep rising, the new government should boost confidence. He also anticipated limited impacts from the US subprime crisis on the motorcycle industry.
Sakurai also noted that the company has not yet benefited from the Japan-Thai Economic Partnership Agreement, which binds Thailand to reduce motorcycle import tariffs by 10 per cent per annum. AP Honda this year plans to import bigger bikes, with engine capacity of over 100cc, for sale in Thailand.
AP Honda anticipated a zero revenue growth this year. In 2007, its sale revenue dropped 14 per cent year on year, compared to the 17 per cent fall in the industry.
