What the Speaker does

The House Speaker plays a crucial role in the legislative branch.

Published on January 23, 2008

The passage or amendment of laws, including the constitution, plus the speeding up or slowing down of any bills considered by the House all depends on the House Speaker.

The PPP-led government is expected to try to amend the 2007 Constitution and issue an amnesty for the 111 banned executives from the Thai Rak Thai party. So the Speaker would be closely involved in these moves.

The House Speaker also processes any censure motion and has the authority to delay or speed up the process to put it on the House agenda.

When there is conflict between independent agencies or legal disputes over any laws, the House Speaker has the authority to submit the case to the Constitution Court for legal review.

If one-tenth of MPs sign a request asking for an MP's status to be removed, the Speaker has the authority to submit the request to the Constitution Court to decide if the MP's status should end.
