Sale of TAGS 'ill-advised'

The recent approval by the board of Airports of Thailand (AOT) to sell its 28.5-per-cent stake in its Thai Airports Ground Services (TAGS) subsidiary will likely not be beneficial to the company, says an executive source.

Published on January 23, 2008

The source at AOT said selling a stake in TAGS would be disadvantageous to the company in terms of the subsidiary's stock price and airport ground services, which are linked to AOT businesses.

The source said TAGS was considered a firm with long-experienced staff and which had gained the trust of airlines. But it failed in the bidding for ground services and warehouse management at Suvarnabhumi Airport in 2003.

Currently, these businesses are operated by two companies: Bangkok Flight Service, a subsidiary of Bangkok Airways; and Thai International Airways.

Meanwhile, AOT has become an outsourcing company for the two others.

The source said efforts were being made by many sides to take over TAGS, because it had ready equipment and more than 1,000 employees who did not need training.

"AOT's board should consider whether the business that TAGS is doing and its employees are necessary for the company or not," the source said, adding that otherwise, the share price for TAGS would probably not be as high as expected.
