Oriental goes high-tech with Bt20m IT upgrade

The Oriental Hotel Bangkok has spent Bt20 million on a new high-speed wireless system to upgrade its information-technology network.

US-based Cisco Systems has installed its next-generation wireless 802.11N technology, the world's first deployment of the equipment in the hospitality industry.

Hotel manager Paul Jones said The Oriental was recognised as one of the world's foremost luxury and legendary hotels.

"With over 130 years of history, achieving this reputation is an honour for the hotel and one which we respect by constantly evolving with the times and our guests' expectations," he said.

"In terms of technology, in today's world, this means offering the latest advancements to make a guest's stay as comfortable and convenient as possible."

The hotel charges Bt642 per day for the wireless service.

Jones said today's business traveller demanded more than simple connectivity and wanted voice, video and data options which are efficient, convenient, secure and, most importantly, accessible any time, anywhere in the hotel.

Vatsun Thirapatanapong, Cisco Systems (Thailand) director of business development, said the company had been working with the hotel to ensure the network could solve a business challenge.

"We were pleased to be part of the effort in delivering premium services to the hotel guests," he added.
