Yongyuth resigns

People Power Party party-list MP Yongyuth Tiyaphairat yesterday resigned as deputy leader and a party executive after being nominated to become Speaker of the House of Representatives.

The resignation of Yongyuth follows the Constitution's Article 124 that states House Speaker candidates must not be a party executive, said Samarn Lertwongrat, the PPP's registrar.

Election Commission secretary-general Suthiphon Thaveechaiygarn said the resignation would have no impact on the EC's investigation into Yongyuth's alleged election fraud.

If he is found guilty, he could face disqualification and his party could face dissolution.

The PPP yesterday resolved to nominate Yongyuth as House Speaker and former Deputy House Speaker Somsak Kiartsuranont and Apiwan Wiriyachai as deputies.

Earlier yesterday, Democrat Party election centre spokesman Thepthai Senpong said the PPP should nominate someone else due to Yongyuth's alleged involvement in electoral fraud.

"We want to see a House Speaker who is innocent. The PPP has many people who are suitable for the post besides Yongyuth," he said.

The post will be decided at a parliamentary meeting today.
