Maj-General Jamlong Khunsong, commander of the 15th Infantry Division, called on parents of Muslim youths in the three strife-torn provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat to keep a close watch on their male children.
He said no evidence had been found that al-Qaeda had provided military training to Muslim youths residing in foreign countries during overseas studies.
The officer said the websites were highly accessible in Thailand to those interested in terror-related content which provided clear images and graphics on terrorist activities, such as how to set up ambushes or make bombs from home-made or industrial material.
Jamlong expressed concern that many of several thousands of male Muslim youths living overseas had sought training or direct links with local al-Qaeda cells in countries where they were studying.
Abdul Arziz Tadir-in, a deputy head of the Muslim Association of Thailand (YMAT), said it was possible Muslim youths were visiting terror-related websites.
He called on authorities to regulate online content more strictly.
