Acting director Thepchai Yong said TPBS would air from 6pm to midnight starting February 1 and the broadcasting hours would be expanded to 24 hours at a later stage.

The main programmes during the 6-hour airtime are news, documentaries, children's programmes and certain "useful films" that have not yet been shown in Thailand, he said.

He said the programmes for TPBS would have variety and would have both good content and entertainment value.

He said TPBS had now recruited about 150 employees and would accept more in the next few months.

Employees are being sought in five departments: management, news production, programming, studio and general production and technical support. Thepchai said the Viewer's Council that will appraise TPBS will comprise 10 people from various fields in the initial phase.

The body, to be set up under TPBS law, will have no more than 50 people in the long run.

Thepchai vowed on Friday not to allow anyone to monopolise producing of programmes for the station.

Speaking during a public hearing on programmes for children and families, Thepchai said there would be no "mafia" in the station.
