The mighty Thai Army

About one third of Bangkok residents surveyed by researcher Antonio Rappa say they think the military carries influence because they possess guns, but another third say it is because the military has earned the people's trust.

Published on January 16, 2008

Rappa polled 125 respondents in the capital for his survey and about 32 per cent said the military should confine itself to the barracks, while 40 per cent said such a suggestion was wrong.

An overwhelming 86 per cent said it was false to assume the military had enough experience to discipline political parties.

However, 54 per cent were opposed to the view that civilians should always control the military in a democratic country, while 17 per cent supported this view.

About 56 per cent disagreed (and 40 per cent agreed) with the suggestion that military governments were incapable of democratic governance.

About 57 per cent disagreed that the military was least likely to be vulnerable to corruption, while 19 per cent backed this view.
