Drug link

There are ties between Monday's arrest of two drug dealers, one of whom was a pregnant teenager, and the discovery of 400 amphetamine tablets in Bang Kwang Prison earlier on the same day, a police officer said yesterday.

Police found that Nikhom Bunjan and his pregnant girlfriend Arisa Phanthome frequently visited a drug-convicted inmate identified as Tam at the notorious maximum-security prison near Bangkok.

Tam is serving a life sentence for dealing 1,400 amphetamine tablets a few years ago, said Pol Colonel Phokphibool Protranant.

The officer cited a credible tip-off as speculating that Sutthi Anusornpratheep was hired to bring three cellphones into the prison to coordinate a new drug deal involving 60,000 amphetamine tablets for Tam.

He said police were investigating to gather more evidence.
