Memorial for teachers

Teachers in the far South plan to mark National Teachers Day today by organising a memorial to make merit for "91 heroic teachers" who have lost their lives in the southern violence while serving their country.

The ceremony will also honour HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana, who passed away two weeks ago.

Some 3,000 to 5,000 teachers are expected to attend the event to be held at CS Pattani Hotel in Pattani from 7am to 4pm, said Boonsom Thongsri-plai, chairman of the Teachers Federation for the southernmost provinces yesterday.

Alms giving to Buddhist monks would be held in the morning followed by a "Wai Khru" ceremony for students to pay respect to teachers, he said.

The afternoon will feature academic discussions and exhibitions.

The objective of the event was to heal and boost the morale of families of the slain teachers as well as those teaching in the strife-torn region, he said.
